Both are almost identical except that the 507 must be 5W30 and the 229.51 can be 5W30 or 5W40. Mobil 1 ESP (5W30) is both VW 507.00 & MB 229.51 approved while Mobil 1 ESP-M (5W40) is MB 229.51 approved only. Both (either) oil is safe to use, but I would stick to the 507.00 (5W30) oil while the car is under warranty.

In reply to nr123 I am afraid that 4.5 litres is incorrect. How can I be so sure? I have changed the oil several times on my 2005 and 2008 Golf with the 2.0 TDi (140) non-DPF engine. Do you have the various booklets that came with the car (tucked away in a slot in the glove locker)? If so look in section 3.3 Technical Data, page 20.
